A little less than 2 weeks ago, as I was getting ready to release “Spacetime” and begin the rollout for my new album From The Ashes of Our Homes (alongside Khingz’ A Safe Place For Us!), I started seeing images for Vanishing Seattle’s new exhibit at Railspur. Actual pieces of buildings that are no longer here, that all mean so much in my memory, together in one place.
There were signs from RCKNDY, where I saw the first concert I ever bought a ticket for, and the Lo-Fi Performance Art Gallery, which housed some of my favorite performance memories, along with the legendary hip-hop night Stop Biting. There were signs from the grocery aisles of the Red Apple on 23rd, which was blocks from the first apartment I ever had in my name, and had the best soundtrack of any grocery you’ve ever walked into. And so much more. There couldn’t have been a better location to film this bluesy meditation on if home is really in a place, a time, a memory, or something in between.
Cynthia Brothers of Vanishing Seattle (an incredible project that started on Instagram, documenting and celebrating the Seattle we know and love, which is disappearing and shapeshifting all around us) allowed us to film in the exhibit while it was closed to the public. My good brother and rapper-with-a-camera at large Prometheus Brown (who’s new EP is excellent) filmed the whole thing on Sunday morning, I spent a few hours editing it on Monday, and we released this video to the world just yesterday! There’s captions for the lyrics on YouTube as well.
I want to thank everyone who’s shared the video already, there’s really no machine behind what we do, it’s just y’all.
Also, I have some exciting show announcements and updates for Seattle, Tacoma and Mexico City! Here’s my updated calendar with ticket links for all the places…
