Coffee & Sage
Thank you to everyone who is still with me on this Substack! I wanted to let you know about some new music in the world.
We released this one just in time for Indigenous Peoples’ Day in October of this year. It's one of countless stories of Black & Indigenous co-resistance, and is very specific to the Pacific Northwest. This was also the last song recorded in my home studio before our house burned down in 2020. On that note I should let you know, there’s a new album on the way from me: From The Ashes Of Our Homes coming in 2023!
I always knew this song would be released with a video, because there’s so many historical references in the lyrics that I wanted people to also see. Filming everything we wanted to see was also a bit of a challenge, so we did this as an experiment in community-sourced filmmaking.
Video, photographs and archival footage from Futsum Tsegai, Gabriel Teodros, Gord Hill, Third Eye Bling, Native-Land.ca (check the website and learn about the people of the land you are standing on), Calina Lawrence (ʔəshəliʔ ti txʷəlšucid), Marcus Joe, Senait Habte, Asmeret Habte, Toni Hill, The Black Panther, Bri McDaniel, Storme Webber, and John with the #hethnic Black and Indigenous Solidarity shirts.
Thank you to everyone who participated in any way.
The next song and next video is called Open Letter, and it’s coming out this Friday. Just in time for the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on 11/29!
You heard it here first.
