Here's some love from Rainier Beach
“Peace, what you need? Here’s some love from Rainier Beach…”
The latest single in our series of records we are giving you building up to the release of A Safe Place For Us / From the Ashes of Our Homes is “Badtz Maru” by Khingz featuring Rell Be Free and myself… music produced by Khingz too! We did a majority of the production on both of our albums. This is song is about how to live in the face of immense loss, a subject that we work through across the entire project. Available exclusively on Khingz Bandcamp today.
I also want to send love to everyone that’s been rocking with me Early on KEXP, always, but especially last week, as the outpouring of love for that show has been overwhelming. Prometheus Brown, Reverend Dollars and DJ Miss Ashley all joined me in the booth these last few days, and Monday’s show features the two new hosts of KEXP’s brand new Global Indigenous show Sounds of Survivance, Tory Johnston and Kevin Sur, followed by my very last episode as host of Early on Tuesday, September 12 (Ethiopian & Eritrean New Years) with special guest co-host Eva Walker (who takes over as host of Early the following day) and Khingz, because well… what better way to go out than a live listening party for the music you haven’t heard yet? Tune in for that live from 5-7am (pacific time) and you can catch any of the shows you missed in the 14 day streaming archive here, or on the free KEXP mobile app.
In other KEXP news, I was honored to lend my voice to this week’s episode of KEXP’s 50 Years of Hip-Hop podcast featuring the OG’s of Palestinian Hip-Hop, DAM! You can listen to that episode here, and catch a bonus interview that Isabel Khalili got to do with Tamer Nafar and Maysa Daw of DAM here.
And for everyone who is local to the Northwest, I wanted to let y’all know that our September 23rd show in Seattle at the Clock-Out Lounge is nearly sold out, but we’ve got plenty of tickets to sell for this upcoming all-ages show with Kimmortal and Nic Masangkay, THIS Thursday, September 14th! I’m bringing DJ Pax with me, and planning to have another guest with me on mic that day as well, you gotta be there to see it. Tickets are available here, and I want to leave you with some of the brilliance that is Kimmortal to get you as hyped as I am for Thursday’s show. If you are outside of Seattle, they have upcoming dates all the way down the west coast, and in Toronto and Montreal too. Tickets for the whole tour are here.
Kimmortal’s “Sad Femme Club” is one of the most-requested songs on Early, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez posted a video of herself rapping along to it too
“you are not a burden baby, you are on purpose baby”
…hope to see you at the show!
