Thank you to everyone who came through for our release party at the Clock-Out Lounge last weekend! Jennifer Johns and The Physics both had incredible sets… it was already one of the best shows I’ve seen all year before we even got to the stage. Much love to AbJo and Alex Dyring and the whole Good Foot band, Mic Flont for hosting the night, and all of our people that came through! I saw folks that came to the show last night from MA, TX, several from CA… it just meant so much to see y’all there. And shoutout to Rell Be Free and Prometheus Brown for hopping on our set too! Classic night.
I also want to thank Alex Ruder at KEXP for this thoughtful review of the new album, along with Karas Lamb at Okayplayer for the shoutout in Mixtape Monday and Charles Mudede at The Stranger for the first ink these albums ever got. Releasing music independently with no label or any kind of publicist makes every spin, every piece of press, and every add to a playlist mean so much more.
Gabriel Teodros - From the Ashes of Our Homes (self-released)
The latest album from South Seattle native, musician, writer, and former KEXP DJ Gabriel Teodros is a powerful set of introspective hip-hop infused with warm R&B and jazz touches that captures his welcoming energy and clear vision driven by family, community, growth, love, and healing. With vivid, insightful, poetic reflections on the tragic fire that him and his spouse, Ijeomo Oluo, had to flee from in September 2020, longtime friends that have passed away, and a shifting landscape wracked by the pandemic, wars, and the climate catastrophe, From the Ashes of Our Homes finds strength in its honest and reflective lyrics that focus on building and nurturing relationships, both at home and in the community. Gabriel serves as the trusted narrator for the album, a record that also marks his introduction to the world as a beat producer, but it’s undeniably a communal affair with support coming from his close-knit network of fellow Ethiopian-American artists, Seattle-based artists, and Seattle-rooted artists, who lend their voices and instruments to the project. — Alex Ruder, KEXP
While it's true the album has a ton of guests, they actually are from all over the place. I mean... just look at all these incredible faces… and these are just some of the artists featured. Representing Seattle, Copenhagen, Tigray, Ethiopia, Montreal, San Francisco, Guåhan, Oakland, Toronto, and more. Full credits below.
I would love to know if you’re listening to the album, and what you think. And if you want to tell the world what you think, even better!
It’s on Bandcamp, Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal… really anywhere you listen to music.
Also this week, I started teaching at the UW! And I have really missed doing a radio show every morning. Thankful for this space to share new mixes... this one today has new music, some classics, and I hosted it the way I would have on the air.
Stay tuned for a new podcast launching here and wherever you listen to podcasts, starting sometime in the next few weeks.
That new mix of music is here for you below this next line.
